Real hot chocolate

You can make your own real raw cacao hot chocolate at home.

You can really flavour this any which way you feel with real ingredients that excite you. If you want to use coconut milk, I’d suggest adding some cardamom to the cup. For a real mint hot chocolate, take 2 sprigs of mint and dice finely into the cacao mix in the cup.

Let children stir the chocolate mix into the cup while explaining why this is a better alternative to conventional hot chocolate mixes.

It’s a way to teach them about healthier food choices in a way that doesn’t come across lecturey and connects them to delicious tastes which makes them more receptive. Add the fact that they’re stirring and making a paste and all involved and it further connects them to quality time with you. It’s a win all round.

Tell them that the hot chocolate from the shops and at restaurants as sugar as it’s larger ingredient. Explain to them that this one doesn’t have sugar and so won’t make them feel hyper and then ratty afterwards. Explain to them that this one contains the milk and cream from cows who have been raised outside and not given medicine that isn’t good for us and that the normal ones have dried milk powder in from cows who have not been outdoors much or treated as well. If dairy is an issue with your children, then you can explain while you are adding the non-dairy milk that you are using that one as cows milk can make them snotty and this is one that doesn’t.

Explain to them that the one they are making doesn’t contain artificial flavourings but the real taste of real chocolate and that raw cacao powder is what chocolate is made from.

You can tell them the one they are making won’t make them feel hyper or ratty because it doesn’t have artificial flavourants which are chemicals included.

In this way you are spending good time with them and educating them about food in a way that is rewarding to them instead of sounding like a lecture and they will forever associate the memory of real food that is healthier with love and with you and then when they taste it and love it, they will learn that healthy food is great.

You can then congratulate them for making something that is healthier.

Instructions
  1. Place either your cream and milk – or your non-dairy alternative – into a sauce pan on medium heat, to gently warm. Do not boil.
  2. While the milk is heating, take a cup and add the cacao powder, orange juice, vanilla extract, cinnamon and the honey – stir into a paste in the cup, stir until smooth.
  3. Add your warmed milk to the glass, this is much richer than ordinary hot chocolate which is filled with sugar and milk powder – so it’s best to serve in smaller, daintier mugs or glasses.
  4. Grate over some orange zest to decorate and optional – some dark 80% chocolate of choice.
Recipe Notes

It is empowering to make your own hot chocolate instead of the processed refined sugar mass produced powders sold in tins in supermarkets. This recipe can easily be made at home with your children to help them understand what true hot chocolate tastes like.

This recipe can easily be made dairy free. Simply replace the cream and milk with your favourite non dairy milk.
